There are many pixels on the screen, and redrawing still finishes in
reasonable time.  Computers have become faster since the seventies.

If this is a general problem of completion, tackling it will speed up a
lot of user interaction.  If it is a problem of getting the data (rather
than turning it into a form fit for completion), it still might be
possible to better batch that process.

While "there are many characters" is likely an indicator that behavior
is not quadratic or worse, that does not mean that it is beyond
improvement.
