faster tag-search

When my new machine with an SSD didn't seem to perform
tag searches any faster than my old machine, I got to wondering
if the status message was slowing everything down.

I found a significant improvement just by changing the
"Scanning file ..." message.  I believe it was mostly waiting
on video refresh, but I'm not entirely certain.

The diff is against the latest etags.el from the http git interface.
