I don't know whether it is "really important". I know that my
customizations break almost every time someone changes the default
mode-line.

I'm not sure what do you mean here by "customizing". Certainly,

  (setcar (cdddr (cadadr (cadadr mode-line-client))) ...)

is not "hard", but it is not evident either.
