If you like to play, try this:
# dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal
/org/freedesktop/Hal/Manager org.freedesktop.Hal.Manager.GetAllDevices
# dbus-send --print-reply --system --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/computer
org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.GetPropertyString string:'system.vendor'
