Agreed. I think either approach can be made to work, and they both have
their shortcomings. But since the intent is to make the line wraps when
displayed, it makes sense to use display properties (at least until Kim's
patch to make the display support word-wrapping natively gets installed).
BTW, to support your proposed solution, you want to use screen-lines.el
(which may need some improvement: I've never tried it).
