Having to use the prefix-argument for getting the interactive
user-friendly version and getting the complex expert version by
default is backwards-compatible but backwards.

In this case I'd consider it prudent to sacrifice the compatibility in
the user interface (Kim made sure that we _have_ compatibility for
non-interactive use).
