No, you did not screw up your installation.  I just reproduced your
experience with a very recent

CVS snapshot of 2002 Aug 23  17:28 UTC,
GNU Emacs 21.3.50.184 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit)
started as

    emacs -q --no-site-file --eval '(blink-cursor-mode 0)'

and evaluating

    (read-from-whole-string "foo")
