Obsolete volatile in alloc.c?

I'd like to remove the volatile qualifiers in alloc.c (all but the first
one) on the assumption that they are obsolete.  The comments say that they
work around an apparent hardware problem on some FSF machines.  These
volatiles were installed on 1993/08/08, and IMHO this cruft should not be
necessary any more, given how many changes this file has gone through.
Any objections?
