So you are saying that the original reason for the dashes was to make
the mode line stand out when the terminals didn't have the inverse
video capability?
Richard, can you tell if this is true?
GNU Emacs supported inverse video for mode lines ever since 1985. I
think the reason was for symmetry. The mode line starts with dashes,
so it looks good ending with dashes.
