mode-line face

My mode-line face, in addition to the usual stuff, has the attributes

  :inherit variable-pitch
  :height 1.2

which I think is prettier, and more readable, than the normal
fixed-pitch mode-line. Because it's variable-pitch, the extra size
doesn't really reduce the amount visible text; if anything, it
displays *more* information than the default.

I'm curious what people think of making this default.

I'm not sure `highlight' face is the best name, since the most noticeable
use is for mouse-overs (whereas `highlight' suggests to me something
more of an in-band emphasis, e.g., bold or something without the
bg-color ramped up).

But given this conventional use, diff-mode certainly shouldn't be using
it to wrap hunk/file headers. In fact, I would venture to say that the
hunk/file headers should be *de*emphasized (with perhaps the filename
standing out), as for most purposes, their actual content is just noise,
and their (visual) effectiveness as dividers would be just as well
served by something tending more towards the background, which would
then not draw attention away from the actual content of the hunks.
