Dear bug-emacs, it would be great if you could provide more detailed
instructions on how to install Emacs on common platforms. I suggest
you copy and paste the entire text of Phil Sung's instructions at
http://web.psung.name/emacs/setup.html directly into the middle of
http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/#Obtaining . The bottom of Phil's
instruction page says "I release the material on this page into the
public domain", and Phil's a humble guy, but I still suggest you folks
give him credit in the fine-print section at the bottom of the page.
:)
Phil, thanks for writing your excellent setup instructions.

Closing since the info at http://web.psung.name/emacs/setup.html is
now obsolete.
The website has been updated recently, there are installation
instructions at https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/download.html. In
discussions about it, Richard Stallman was against adding more distro
specific detail to the install instructions, some opposition to that
view[1], but in the end it seems to have stayed non-distro specific.
