For students of computer science, you are right. But this project is
for schools in general. Politicians paint themselves green and turn
dead-trees books into bits. As a side effect they turn innovative, as
technology will save us all from every disease and scarcity. The
tablets are books (oh, they also save the shoulders and backs of our
children). There's no place for keyboards and shells.

It's clear from the above that I think it may be a bad choice, like
you do. On one side technology subjugates, on the other paper comes
from specific plants -- most of my area is growing trees to make paper
-- while tables decays into special waste in two years or less.

However the choice has already been made, so trying to participate
with a free software and possibly free hardware device is good.

[sometimes teaching software is good and can convey more knowledge
than non-software tools, but this is not generally true, in my
opinion]
