Part of the confusion stems from the fact that the "default" command
attempts incremental, and falls back on full. But in my mind (knowing
that the archive is empty) I was thinking "full" from the beginning.

Truth be told, an empty archive (= no files) can be detected without any
passphrase. I didn't attempt to refine my patch that much.
