OK, if no one else has an opinion on this, I'll do the following:
I've realized that V1 should actually be doable with valid markup if I use
<li><div class"navitem"><a>…</a></div></li>
and then make some of the styling only refer to the <div> instead of the
<li>.
So, I'll try to implement V1 in valid markup first. If that fails, I'll
go for V3.
