X11 is a binary protocol, but is extremely simple
in its design, and strictly adheres to the principle
of "mechanism, not policy".

Which is why it has lasted so long when all attempts
to replace it have failed. Replacements typically
have a lot of policy (meta-level descriptive data),
and so are next to impossible to implement simply.

The proponents of CORBA, COM, WSDL, SOAP, etc always
focus on the meta-level policy aspects and forget
that they are supposed to be building a mechanism
for delivering requests and data.

Cheers,

Rhys.
