yes, dual licensing would be another option, but we wanted to avoid that. It's
confusing and more complicated.
MySQL was different: there was a commercial license for the LGPL client library
whereas you could build GPL software using their GPL client library (as we did
until now). Now there is the free LGPL MariaDB client library, that enables us
to think about a new own license option.
Btw. it was Monty on his keynote at FrosCon who sparked our thoughts into this
direction.

sure, but it didn't happen all those years. If there should come patches
contributions now, we will have no problem paying for them.
