Sorry, I forgot to mention that you need to switch on the verbode output
by using "make messages=yes".
What we are interested in is the link statement. From your error message
I would guess that the GNUstep backend isn't linked with the XFT
library. You can check that with ldd. And the only way to tell why this
is happening is to look at the link statement used to build the backend.
In the meantime you could switch over to the cairo backend and see
whether that gets linked correctly.

make distclean; ./configure --enable-graphics=cairo; make -j3; make install


If you want to switch back to the art backend you will have to use this
statement:
make distclean; ./configure --enable-graphics=art; make -j3; make install
