  I check out the gnustpe-back r25450
and it has the same problem of "out of memory".
r25450 is the last version which worked for me with cairo 1.2.4.
So I guess something is changed in cairo from 1.2.4 to 1.4.10
which breaks cairo backend for some platforms.
