This is correct. In most places I worked so far the only way to become admin/root is to bring along your own computer. On the other computers, the OS is usually already there and installing something into /Applications gives you nothing.

Well designed apps work just everywhere and most third party apps do so. "Drag and drop the application to where it's convenient for you" is the usual installation recommendation.


So it's ok if root privileges are required to install some magic software [...] It's the task that Apple is going through whenever they release a new os.

If you insist on having the same acceptance as Apple's Mac OS X bugfix releases, you've already lost, IMHO.
