agree on the location as the 'correct' location differed across so
many systems (though /etc is wrong on all systems as far as I know).

That tallies with my recollection also -

But the list archives are a better source of info than my memory...

Something of a pain to try to track down the correct place though ...
especially if there was no firm conclusion.

I seem to recall that we agreed to make the hard-coded default location for
the file configurable (by which I understood that it would be an option to
the configure script).  I'll check to see if that was done in the latest
patches applied.

My suggestion would be ... keep the old default location, and ensure that a
different location can easily be set with an argument to the 'configure'
script.
