I have installed libiconv-1.8-sol9-sparc-local from sunfreeware.com. The library is available.

bash-2.05# find /usr -name "*libiconv*"
/usr/local/doc/libiconv
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.la
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.2
/usr/local/lib/libiconv.so.2.1.0
/usr/local/lib/libiconv_plug.so

The lib path should be found as well.

bash-2.05# crle

Configuration file [3]: /var/ld/ld.config
  Default Library Path (ELF): /usr/lib:/usr/local/lib
Trusted Directories (ELF): /usr/lib/secure (system default)

Command line:
  crle -c /var/ld/ld.config -l /usr/lib:/usr/local/lib

Any idea how to fix this?

I think Solaris has iconv support integrated in the standard library (at least Solaris 7 does). In which case, GNUstep is probably getting confused about which iconv system to use. There was a recent patch to CVS that should fix that problem, or you could just uninstall libconv (and recompile gnustep-base).
