Na, no need to bother--the art backend is what it's supposed to be like, for anti-aliased fonts. Either I get that running or I'll live without them in GNUstep. Using two patches (or one patch plus code changes by hand) to get xlib to use anti-aliased fonts, running at sensible speeds and with the right font sizes ... I don't think a lot of people will give that a shot considering art is available--and most people I know don't like anti-aliased fonts anyway. ;) Thanks for the offer, though, it's much appreciated.

One question remains, mind--libfreetype versions that art compiles just fine with may become deprecated sooner or later. Is the art backend still maintained? Or will GNUstep use different means of providing anti-aliased fonts in the future, e.g. XFT2 à la the next Window Maker?
