Yep, there are problem with using directfb as a back end. The main one being that resource management is cooperatively based (AFAIK).

I could still write a directfb backend by doing it in a way much like OS X does...Shared memory and a light weight window manager.

How hard would it be to implement a window manager directly on top of the linux-framebuffer?
