Although you might already know, in http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html, you'll find an introductory material, 'UTF-8 and Unicode FAQ for Unix/Linux', by Markus Kuhn. I found it useful for me to write "the patch" (I will send it to bug-gnustep shortly).
