Sounds very useful, I agree that there is a significant number of applications which only need to send mail. But do not underestimate the complexities in creating mails which support both, attachments and other mail clients ;-)
Skyrix-core is used in two complete IMAP4 mail clients and contains all the unfortunate complexities involved with that. For many applications it's too much (but still could be encapsulated in simpler wrappers, eg we have done that in our own WOMailDelivery implementation).
