By chance I experienced exactly the same problem and error message, by
compiling and installing the gnustep-make package *before* discovering
that gnustep-base won't compile without RH's objc rpms installed (doh!).
I then installed the objc stuff, compiled gnustep-base with no apparent
problems, but encountered the above error in compiling gnustep-gui.
Solution: start again by building gnustep-make so that it can pick up the
full, correct config info from objc. The gnustep-gui package should then
compile without error.
