Shouldn't it be

set  
solib-search-path=/usr/GNUstep/System/Libraries/ix86/linux-gnu/gnu-gnu- 
gnu

or something similar?  I've also had luck setting the LD_LIBRARY_PATH  
environment variable from WITHIN gdb.
