ive just noticed my distro comes with gcc 3.0.1 ( as well as the gcc 2.96 ive been using ). Would i be better of using this version of gcc3 ( rather than 2.96 with the gnustep-objc runtime ) ?

Yes. much better. gcc 2.96 is a dubious version. I don't think it was ever an official gcc release and it is quite broken on several platforms.
