I'v also had the same problem with the core snapshot. The 8/7 snapshot 
produced the same results for me (tar 1.13.11, bzip2 0.9.5). The 
md5sum that I got from the file was:

6e167bdaa62a7f7bb85b792bfdb68a

I made sure it was a binary download. Upgrading to bzip2 1.0.1 didn't 
seem to help. The other snapshot files have worked fine.
