It wouldn't actually address any of our problems ... 

It wouldn't make the text system work better
It wouldn't improve X integration
It wouldn't enhance gui functionality

It *might* improve drawing performance - but that's not a problem
right now.
It might improve drawing functonality for graphics based apps.

I approve of someone volunteering to write a libart based backend, it
might help in the long run and it's got to be worth lookng at, but I
don't actually see anyone volunteering.
