Helge,

It doesn't support GNUstep per se.  It's because GNUstep places a config.site 
file (can't remember the exact file name, it might be somewhere else)  
somewhere where configure expects it, and that overrides your system layout, so 
libraries are put into other places, and headers, etc.

It was actually quite frustrating, because this clashed rather nastily at first 
with OpenBSD's packaging system, but once I realized what happened, I just 
removed the file (renamed it) if I was doing any ports stuff from bsd, and 
returned it when I was installing any gnustep stuff.
