Same-box loopback without considerable attenuation in the coax is not healthy for the receiver (worst case), and best-case will cause
  non-linear operation of the receiver gain chain.

Most SDRs are designed so that their receivers can be used directly "on the air", and so have receiver gain stages that are optimized for
  that application.  That means that they will be horribly non-linear when presented with the high power levels produced by a typical
  transmitter.
