After thinking about this issue some more, I've realized there are two
ways that users look at the discussion threads:
A) going to the website
<https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/discuss-gnuradio/> to read the
various topics; and
B) responding to the "Discuss-gnuradio Digest" email.
The discussion I presented previously was focused on (A), since the
Digest *does* present the real email addresses of the participants.
So, for (B), I propose the following to replace
```
When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific
than "Re: Contents of Discuss-gnuradio digest..."
```
with something like this:
```
When replying to a specific Topic, please do the following:
- Click on the email address of the 'From'. That should open a compose
window with the 'To' address filled in.
- Add <address@hidden> in the 'Cc' field.
- Add any other respondents you wish by copying their email addresses
to the 'To' or 'Cc' fields.
- Copy the Subject line of that topic and paste it into the subject
line. Be sure to put "Re:" at the beginning.
- an example subject line is "Re: [Discuss-gnuradio] Responding to this
discussion platform from webmail"
- After your response, include applicable portions of the preceding
topic responses, but NOT the entire Digest.
```
I invite others to suggest improvements to the wording.
Best regards,

Hi!
I have noticed that if a person uses a webmail service (meaning logging
into a website such as gmail) to send their email, rather than an email
client (such as Thunderbird or Apple Mail), the mechanics of responding
to a discussion item become very difficult. To illistrate this:
With an email client:
1) the user clicks on a discussion topic and wants to respond.
2) the user clicks on the name just below "reply via email to".
3) the email client opens a window with the To address and the Subject
already filled in.
4) the user types their response and sends it (hopefully with a Cc to
discuss-gnuradio).
With a webmail user:
1) the user clicks on a discussion topic and wants to respond.
2) if the user clicks on the name just below "reply via email to",
nothing happens, and the user doesn't know the email address because it
is hidden.
So the only alternative is to respond to discuss-gnuradio without
sending an email to the author. If the user doesn't do some copy and
paste, this also can lead to dropping the real subject and replicating
the entire digest!
I use a webmail server, and wanted to let the administrators know about
the situation. But I haven't thought of any easy answers :(
Best wishes,
