WASHINGTON The FCC has approved the use of software-defined radio in the
United States.
The agency said Friday (Nov. 19) it has certified a GSM basestation
transmitter manufactured by software developer Vanu Inc.. The FCC said
Phoenix-based Vanu demonstrated that its software has sufficient controls
so that the device cannot be modified to operate outside its FCC-approved
parameters.
An ongoing FCC review is defined to streamline its rules on software-defined
radio technology. It is also working with developers on a case-by-case basis
to deploy the technology.
Vanu said the FCC certification paves the way for commercial sale of the
basestations in the U.S. The company initially hopes to sell the
basestations to rural wireless operators.
