I realized I didn't really need gpm again when I clobbered
my config in tried configuring the internal as
XF86Config-4's primary and /dev/input/mice as the secondary.
I have to restart X to make it work, but since X's primary
task anymore is to host my xvncviewer session, I can just
reconnect and regain state.

And that would be exactly what I'd do in directvnc.

I guess it's important to have a way to tell a running vnc
session to re-connect to its input devices.
