Can you give the URL that you used to download?

To get a clean start you need to remove a directory named

~/.denemo-xxx

where xxx is the version number - best is to remove all of these, they
hold your preferences set in earlier attempts to run Denemo.

I'll leave further comments to Jeremiah, as I haven't been able to
follow which versions he is referring to all the time - the ones he is
building IIRC are in 
http://www.denemo.org/~jjbenham/gub/uploads/?C=M;O=D

labelled with ...darwin-x64...
look at the date field to be sure it is something new.
