I can't be sure what version 3.18 is doing, but the way it is broken in
3.10 suggests that the developers only test with tooltips on a few, well
spaced out buttons. So the calculator app on the gnome desktop
applications works ok for the simple case where there are no tooltips on
the +,-, 0,1,2... buttons, but it becomes useless if you switch to
scientific where they have tooltips on sin, cos,1/x, ... and these
buttons are closely spaced so you can't shake them off - another pops up
the moment you move away.
It becomes even more extreme with Denemo, where it is part of the system
that *every* menu item has a tooltip. So you can't move down the menu
without getting deluged. And, to cap it all, they simply disabled the
functions that controlled the timing of the the tooltip's popping up. It
seems to be part of a "we know best" philosophy. If you can install GTK2
then this is not a problem, although palettes can only be one row or
column then.
