both your fixes work. I tried just configuring lilypond but that didn't 
work so I installed it and that did the trick. Then I set the "output 
device" to ALSA:pulse on edit-change preferences-audio and that worked.
Thank you so much.

Would it be ok if I sent through some layman's comments on using the 
application?

There will also certainly also be more questions.
