Andreas
both your fixes work. I tried just configuring lilypond but that didn't work so I installed it and that did the trick. Then I set the "output device" to ALSA:pulse on edit-change preferences-audio and that worked.
Thank you so much.

Would it be ok if I sent through some layman's comments on using the application?

There will also certainly also be more questions.

I presume that this means it is not installed (or not completely?)
Should I go ahead and install it using "sudo apt-get install lilypond"?
Hmm, that looks like lilypond has been unpacked but not configured. Try
  dpkg --configure --pending
However,
  sudo apt-get install lilypond
does not hurt.

My 'Ubuntu help' tells me I'm running Unity. I think this is a desktop
environment?
Are either Rhythmbox or Soundblaster sound servers? I have both of these
and use them. My sound settings are set to 'play sound through'
Soundblaster.
I also use Pulse Audio control.
Yes, Unity is a desktop environment. Rhythmbox is an application (a
music player). It looks like you're using pulseaudio as sound server. I
suggest to set up Denemo to use it.

Andreas
