You might want to change the sound output in denemo preferences. Selecting alsa or default and see if that helps.

Instead download from http://www.denemo.org/downloads-page/, Ubuntu is
many years out of date and, worse, it was modified to conform to a
window manager in such a way that it lost most of its functionality.
