This is a bug I've seen. I haven't explored it (though I am sure it is
because start and stop times are what is stored, and rests are
non-events in MIDI terms) but I would guess a workaround might be
possible by adding stuff at the end - e.g. a midi-silent and
non-printing note...

I quite often get it playing for long stretches with at least the top
part highlight one note behind the midi. So, I suspect this is
computer-performance related.
