It sounds like this could be fixed, but meanwhile perhaps you would like
to try putting all the text of lyrics directly in the LilyPond window as
in the example
SeveralVerses.denemo
This example is good for one verse as well. Inputting in this way is
just cut and paste, followed by any breaking into syllables needed.
(Just a suggestion, in case you should find it easier).
