As Dave mentioned, use
"set_board_info needs_status_wrapper 1"
It does work.

Besides the assertion, I'd just like to add that you don't need
to hack your dejagnu installation, you can add your own
baseboards in e.g. your homedir.  See for example
<http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2007-02/msg01571.html>.
