Performance issues with large arrays

When debugging code that contains a large array declared such as double
test[96][96] the performace of every version of ddd that I recompile myself
is poor and it takes a long time to read out the data.

If I use the ddd version 3.3.1 that redhat supplies with all flavours of
linux then the performance is excellent.

I am at a loss to see what the problem is, any thoughts?
