GDB not ready

ddd 3.3.1 on AIX 4.3.3 RS6000 PowerPC.

When I start ddd, the green button in the lower right remains
flashing.  When I try to set a breakpoint, I get:

        "Break: waiting until GDB gets ready"

My work around is Ctrl-C and type "quit".  I get a pop up:

        "GDB suddenly exited"

I click "Restart GDB" and all is well.  

Is there a way to fix this?
