Oh, yay! Will this do the job of the thing I was considering, that
one could easily incorporate into a daemon (spiffy, etc) so you can
'telnet' in to monitor/reconfigure/test/shut down/etc?

It sounds perfect. Just it doesn't have a fancy name - I was going to
call mine 'eggshell' ;-)
