I had plans to hack UTF-8 to the Chicken someday, but it seems you've
outran me =)

Complete agreed. As an example of UTF-8 success one can remember the
Vim editor. It uses UTF-8 internally, UTF-8 routines are used in the
time-critical pieces of code and they work fast!
