This seems the most likely candidate.

Me too.
srf:~/dev$ set | grep BASH

BASH_VERSINFO=([0]="2" [1]="03" [2]="0" [3]="1" [4]="release"

BASH_VERSION='2.03.0(1)-release'
However, the problem remains when I run the example as root or as a
third user who has /bin/sh as its shell...

Thank you for your response! I'll take a look at the differences
between the two versions of GNU ld now...
