 We just had another hang. strace(1) showed us this output:

 {{{
 select(1024, [], [], NULL, NULL
 }}}

 I don't know why the select call isn't finished in strace. Buffering?
 Anyway, it looks like it's doing a select() call on an empty set of file
 descriptors.
