 Indeed - I didn't think of that. With "internal egg version number" you
 mean the "5" in "$(PREFIX)/lib/chicken/5", right?

 I'd prefer this approach.

 It would be the safest. Alternatively the .setup script of the regex egg
 could check the installed chicken version and act accordingly.
