i committed changes to the build system.  the current svn repo is verified to
build, install, and run correctly on the following targets:
linux (intel x86)
cygwin
mingw

hope this helps :) please ask me before changing ANYTHING about how cygwin 
(or mingw) builds... cygwin especially.  its magic that i worked out through
a combination of going through the gnu linker code and docs and reading the
(primarily useless and incorrect) cygwin docs.
